It’s important that the employees of a business work well together. When there is conflict in the office, staff can’t work as effectively as they should and the entire organisation will suffer. Even a small amount of tension can cause problems in the long run. For this reason, you really need to monitor your employees through asset management

Here are the steps leadership needs to take in order to enhance employee collaboration:

Step 1: Make sure the employees understand leadership’s expectation of their performance

Executive leadership must clearly communicate its expectations for the team’s performance. The team should understand the expected outcome, which should be achieved as smoothly as possible. Let them know that they are expected to work together in order to achieve the expected results, and that conflict will not be tolerated.

Step 2: Hold regular meetings and encourage everyone to share ideas

Leadership should let employees know that their opinions are valued. If they can bounce ideas off one another, they will be better able to collaborate on a project. Sometimes lack of collaboration is due to apathy rather than conflict. Try to get them motivated and interested in a project. When they are motivated, they will be willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Step 3: Don’t forget to offer praise for good behaviour

If team members don’t think that their hard work will pay off, they won’t care enough about the project to collaborate with one another. Let them know that their good deeds will be recognised, and if they complete the project on time, they will be rewarded. Keep a record of success stories to share during company meetings. Remind them of their past collaboration successes.

Step 4: Coordinate teams with a central leadership team

If there is going to be more than one team, then there should be a central leadership team to assist the other groups. The role of the leadership team is to effectively communicate the priorities to every department. Leaders should provide the groups with collaboration resources and tools.

Step 5: Provide employees with up-to-date technology for collaboration

Long gone are the days when employees had to run around from one department to the next in order to share information and resources. Thanks to technology and maintenance software, they can now communicate with each other and share progress without leaving their seats. For employees who prefer talking on the phone, you might want to provide them with VoIP business phones or Skype services.

Step 6: Create a workplace Wiki

Workplace Wikis are relatively new concepts. After Wikipedia’s domination of the web, dozens of Wiki sites started popping up. Wiki sites for businesses give the employees a chance to share their ideas. Taking things one step further, Wikis can be used to centralise information for an entire project. All participants of a project can get the information they need from the same source. This will ensure smooth implementation.

Last but not least, make sure they understand that they will be accountable for their actions, and that they should not blame anyone else for their own behaviour. Employees need to understand that no good will come out of them arguing with each other, and if they do get along and work efficiently with one another, they will be rewarded.

As soon as we start talking client-server applications, or server-based software and business software

, a lot of business people will start getting confused. In reality, many of us are using similar systems in our daily lives. When you log on to your online banking, for example, you are using client-server based software inside the website of your bank, to view, retrieve and manipulate your bank account. We can understand the advantages of client-server based applications and software just by looking at Google Documents.

Google Documents can be a very easy way to replace Microsoft Office and do business in a better way. Once you get used to Google Documents, you will want all your software to behave in the same way. Let’s take a look at the difference between Google Documents, collaborations and traditional ways of using software on each machine.

No duplicate information because of collaboration

Collaboration is the keyword that drives the use of Google Documents. I can allow access to my files to other users, and we can both work on them at the same time, even if we are on the other side of the planet. The original file stays in tact, and revisions are recorded. We do not see duplicated files, files with changed names, we all work on the same files, safely stored on the server.

Data safety

Have you ever lost information on your hard drive? There are those who have, and those who will. I now store everything I own on Google documents. There was a time last year when Google’s servers crashed and died, and with the use of a tape data storage and offsite backup service, all data was back through their disaster recovery storage and rescue plan within hours. You can have the same safety and peace of mind with your data. If Google can do it for the world, you can do it for your organisation.

Data security

With Google Documents, you can create files, upload files and modify and copy files, all while you control access to that information. We can all easily control the information available to others. For example, if I want to stop sharing a document with someone, and I own the document, I change the settings, and they can no longer see that document. This is how your business applications work, just with more sophisticated settings. You have centralised control.

Software updating

Google Documents may look like a window in your browser, and an extension of your Gmail email account, but essentially it is a combination of software applications. They all reside on Google’s servers. These applications improve over time because Google is working on them. Each application only needs to be updated as Google delivers that application to your computer through your browser. There is no need for each person to update their own applications on their computer.

Machine control

The Chromebook is the ultimate extension of Google Documents. Google Chromebooks don’t really have an operating system. The Chrome browser is the operating system, and all the applications reside on Google Servers. You have the same control in, or out of, your office with server-based applications.

Client-server solutions are the only way to go for business. Are you falling behind?

Image via Wikipedia

We all know you will need to study some Adobe courses to make it as a graphic designer, but the software Adobe is putting out is getting seriously sophisticated, and that means you will need a computer that has the power to crunch all those numbers. There was a time when desktops were necessary for anything to do with design and graphics. Today, that is not the case. We all know Apple Macbooks have always been popular, but that does not mean every Apple will be strong enough for your needs. So what are you really looking for? Here are some of the points you should consider:

Screen. Obviously, you will need a large screen. This is where Apple has excelled for a number of years. Apple is very good at making high-resolution matte displays, which are specifically designed for graphic design in mind. Glossy screens might be great for watching movies, but they will not be as comfortable on your eyes when you are staring at that screen for so many hours per day, and they will reflect the environment around you. High resolution is a priority.

Big Processor. These days, you should be looking at a processor with over 2.4Ghz. This is not uncommon. The problem lies within the type of processor. Some processors may be much larger but do not deliver the same speeds as others. It is worth doing some research on the processor type of the machine you are considering. There are a number of websites that will give you the real results from real-life testing scenarios because you cannot always trust the manufacturers.

Loads of RAM. The amount of RAM a machine carries will become very evident when you are running anything Adobe. For example, if you have around 8G of RAM, you will see your machine is cutting through each task. If you only have around 4G, you will feel like you are waiting on each task. The more you concentrate, the longer this time will feel. If you are working on anything for print production, those huge files will mean a lot of work. 300dpi or more resolution, for everything you are doing, will mean a lot of number crunching inside your machine. Adding RAM is not difficult, just make sure you can do it to whatever laptop you buy. You will always want more in the future as your skills improve.

Loads of Graphics RAM. You will need a machine that has a separate graphics card with its own graphics RAM. Graphics that share the CPU RAM will find those big CS5 jobs very tiring.

Can it handle the heat? Not too many people think about overheating issues until they are confronted with them. Overheating has turned into a serious issue for most modern laptops. You will know a powerful laptop because you can fry an egg on it after a few minutes of use. This is something to be very careful about because you might find it overheating so much you will have to shut it down for a while. Think about a cooling fan, or even better, go with a manufacturer that has found a way to deal with overheating processors and components. Always keep your laptop off soft surfaces such as your lap or bedding.

Warranty and Support. Just because you know how to use a computer does not mean you can handle computer repairs. Design work is very hard on any laptop. A designer can use a laptop more in a week than an average user will in 3 months. Make sure you have, or buy, the warranty and computer support package available for your machine.

Make sure that you take your time deciding. Look at what other designers are using in your class, and never just buy on the basis of brand. Each machine is a little different, and they all have their quirks.

Nanotechnology - Composites (Photo credit: Picatinny Arsenal)

The big boom in molecular science is having some interesting global effects. This is the science which is discovering new applications for materials every second. Particle science is translating these discoveries into new technology, and some of that new technology is likely to alter the way people live not in decades, but in a few years. The particle size analyzer is becoming the new workshop for core technologies.

Discovering the Future

Particle science, nano science and molecular science are effectively all branches of the same tree. They all deal with the properties of materials in their micro forms. They feed back on each other, quite literally in triplicate. Particle science, for example, will discover properties in a material. Nano science will create a nano scale version of the material (even gold has been used like this) and molecular science will go to work on the modeling of the material at that scale.

A case in point is some work recently done on a naturally occurring molybdenum ore called molybdenite (MoS2).This is a basic ore with some incredible properties:

It’s better than silicon in creating integrated circuits.

It can transmit an outgoing signal at four times the power of the incoming signal

It can be made into flexible sheets

You don’t need to be an electronics whiz to see the potentials of a material that can do things like this. As everyone knows, silicon is expected to be hitting its threshold for computer operations anytime now. The molybdenite is a commonly occurring material, and it’s a bona fide contender for a replacement. It’s also a classic case of how particle science can create new technologies.

Multifaceted Processes for Multifaceted Results

Particle science isn’t so much complex as painstaking. Particle size and shape have physical properties in any context. From these characteristics come a range of technologies based on particle sizes, shapes and distribution:

Laser diffraction

Nanoparticle size analyzer

Dynamic light scattering

Zeta potential measurement (electrical potentials in a colloid solution)

Particle size distribution analyzer

Particle size measurement

Particle size standards

Particle counter

Each of these functions relates to the specific needs and issues of the material. Modern materials fabrication and manufacturing is based on much more accurate quality standards than in the past:

A nanoparticle size analyzer is a critical control over particle sizes requiring a very high level of consistency.

Dynamic light scattering is a method of assessing particle sizes and calculating the incidence of particle sizes.

The zeta potentials can be used to detail anything from acid content in your cooking oil to designing a new lubricant.

Particle size distribution, size standards and measurement are core analysis tools in materials. Obviously you do need to assess the consistency or otherwise of any material at multiple stages during its creation and application. Fragmentation or coagulation of particles that are supposed to be a given size would mean major problems.

A particle counter is typically a high tech application used to identify discrete particles in a given mathematical context related to production or material properties.

The future is starting small, but it’s creating big science.

Australia is a land of wild extremes, and tourists keep flocking here year after year because there is just so much to see and do. Whether you’re living it up in five star Surfer’s Paradise accommodation while you enjoy the sun and surf, or getting to know the locals in a dusty red outback town, Australia really does have something to offer everyone. However, one of Australia’s greatest attributes is the massive amount of untamed bushland.

The bush in Australia is like nowhere else on earth—the smells, sights and sounds take on a life of their own and there is an indescribable but unmistakable personality to the bush. It’s dangerous and beautiful all at once, and has inspired the work of many artists and poets. Here, we explore a few places where you can head to immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of the Aussie bush.

Kosciusko National Park

Not far out of Canberra lies the beautiful Kosciusko National Park; a veritable Aladdin’s cave of the treasures Southern NSW has to offer. The park is home to Mt Kosciusko, the tallest peak in Australia, and in summer is a playground for hikers, mountain bikers and nature-lovers, while in winter it provides an icy challenge for skiers. The park covers 690,000 hectares, so it is safe to say that you won’t run out of places to explore, and with the kind of serenity you only dream about in the city, simply camping out under the stars will be an incredibly rewarding experience.

Daintree Rainforest

Home to a dazzling array of wildlife and one of the biggest ecosystems in the world, the Daintree Rainforest in Northern Queensland is just about as close to paradise as you’ll get on earth. Comprising of over 1200 square kilometres of rainforest, the Daintree is the largest area of continual rainforest in the entire country, and therefore incredibly important for a number of reasons. The rainforest is protected which means that humans and animals can enjoy it for years to come, and with secret tropical beaches, trickling streams and the steamy, magical feel of something out of a fantasy novel, the Daintree is somewhere truly special.

Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains, just a few hours’ drive outside of Sydney, provide one of the most stunning natural vistas in the state. Made up of a series of sleepy, quaint towns and breathtaking mountains, the Blue Mountains region is also home to the iconic ‘Three Sisters’, a rock formation that draws in thousands of tourists each year. According to mythology, the formation is said to have come into existence in the Dreaming, when three aboriginal sisters were turned to stone for their own protection during a mighty battle. With some of the best bushwalks and hikes available, as well as an old-style wooden railway that takes you right into the peaks, a Blue Mountains tour is a great way to get your bearings for further solo explorations of this beautiful place.

Australia’s bushland is a defining element of the national identity. A visit to Australia is hardly complete without experiencing the rugged beauty of our untamed lands.

Travel is one of the most popular pastimes in the world, transcending age, race and gender to infect people all over the world with its relentless itch. The problem with travel, however, is that it is an expensive habit to keep. Plane tickets, travel insurance, time off and a whole lot of other by-products of the pursuit of travel don’t come cheap, which is why those who have been infected by the travel bug for life would do well to take heed of the following budget travel tips.

Plan Ahead

Doing your research and planning ahead can completely revolutionize the way you travel. Having that extra bit of info that tells you when a town is going to be completely sold out of hostel beds due to a big event can prevent you from having to book into somewhere more expensive as a last resort—and that’s just one of the ways that planning ahead can help.

Shop Around

Seasoned travellers understand that in order to find the best prices on everything from your airfare to your accommodation and tours, shopping around is essential. Luckily, the Internet makes this a breeze with plenty of comparison airfare and hotel travel sites that take the guesswork out of finding the lowest price. Understand also that the time of year/week you’re leaving could have an affect on the price of your travel, so if you can be flexible, you’re likely to get a better deal.

And Speaking of Being Flexible…

…It’s essential for budget travellers to adopt a flexible, happy-go-lucky attitude if they’re going to be able to grab the best bargains on the road. Allowing yourself to jump at that discounted tour offer, or head to the museum on the day where it offers free entry is what being flexible is all about. It’s these little savings that will eventually add up and buy you more time abroad when you want it!

Go With The Flow

If you’re used to staying in serviced apartments in Sydney and then suddenly find yourself in a dorm room in a hostel in Cambodia, chances are that it’s going to be a bit of a culture shock. Being able to ride that wave and adapt quickly to a different environment is a vital tool in the budget traveller’s collection.

Pick Up Tips

On your travels, you will inevitably meet locals and other travellers who can offer you some pearls of wisdom about your onward journey. These people will prove invaluable if you listen to them, so it’s a good idea to carry a notepad or travel journey and jot down tips when you get them. Also, don’t be stingy with the travel tips you’ve picked up yourself—help others and you’ll find you’re helped out a lot more in return.

Being a budget traveller is about putting the experience of the journey above the comforts of home, and acknowledging that different cultures and environments are the biggest treats of all. Follow these travel tips, and you’ll have no issue staying within your budget and having a great time while you’re at it.

Holidays are a time for relaxing and unwinding, though somehow some people always seem to come back from their holidays looking and feeling like they need a holiday to recover from it. Having a truly enjoyable holiday is not a matter of chance; make sure you set yourself up nicely to ensure that your next chunk of time off work is as stress free as possible. Consider the following ideas to help take the stress out of your next holiday.

Pick the Right Place To Stay

Finding the perfect place to spend your holiday is not just a matter of finding the right location but also the right type of accommodation. If you want to stay at a place where you can spread out like you were at home but with all the luxury of a hotel, check out the option of serviced apartments. Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide all have amazing locations where you can stay at a serviced apartment so you will be in the place you want to be, getting treated the way you should be. You may never stay at a regular hotel again!

Insurance

If you are holidaying outside of Australia, get some cheap travel insurance and don’t worry about a thing. Most people never have any kind of negative issues on the overseas holidays, though if you do you will have nothing to worry about. Everything from lost luggage to health concerns can be covered so all you will need to worry about is working on your tan.

Choose Your Travel Partners Carefully

A great way to ruin a friendship is to go travelling together, so make sure you pick the right mates to go on your trip with. Going on an adventure with a friend can be an amazing bonding experience, but only if you are well suited to each other. If you are a plan oriented person, don’t go on holiday with your free spirited friend, and unless you are a highly strung type yourself, wish your highly strung friend a happy holiday and go on separate adventures. There is nothing worse than being in a great spot arguing with a former friend and wishing you’d come alone.

Be Flexible

Travelling is great because even if you’ve planned ahead, you never know what each day will bring. In order to get the most out of your holiday, it’s really important that you are flexible and are able to change plans and direction on the fly. Sometimes a great opportunity will present itself out of the blue, so being a little less attached to your plans can mean you end up in places and situations you’d never even dreamed of.

Plan Ahead A Little

While it’s good to be flexible, there is definitely something to be said for planning ahead a little. If you know that you will be arriving in a place late at night, it might be a good idea to book your accommodation ahead of time. Similarly if you want to visit a popular destination, try to plan to be there when the crowds won’t be at the largest.

The ever expanding reach of the internet and other elements of globalisation have enabled the world of outsourcing to expand beyond previously imagined borders. Instead of being restricted by the space in your office and a small distance within which people could commute, the reach of your business is now unlimited, even with regards to your employees. There are 3 trends of outsourcing in small businesses that can enable you to earn your income without having to stress over it 24/7.

1. Outsourcing is easy

Even as a sole-trader, it is possible to outsource vast amounts of your work. Things which were once considered as ‘core’ offerings of a business can now be outsourced to individuals or companies. Outsourced IT and accountancy are still, of course, sent to the professionals by small businesses, but the reach is now much further. Marketing companies are now even outsourcing marketing jobs along with their business IT support, without sacrificing the quality that they offer.

In order to outsource effectively you will need to consider: what can be outsourced, whether you can commit the time to training your outsourced staff, and whether an entire process can realistically be outsourced (note that it usually can).

2. Outsourcing is worldwide

One challenging element of outsourcing is trust. There are several ways to outsource depending on your desires but some are more efficient than others. Many businesses outsource by employing a staff member, training them on site, and then sending them off to work from home. This method does provide you with an opportunity to meet your employees, but this is not the only way.

Social media such as Facebook, Skype and Google Chat are alternative methods of ‘meeting’ your employee. I have personally participated in interviews and business consultations at 2am through the medium of Skype. As long as you are capable of judging the potential employee on the elements that matter, such as ability and suitability, rather than their tired appearance then you will find yourself able to access a far greater range of suitable employees from all over the world.

3. Outsourcing is paid differently

Outsourcing payment is the element that often dissuades the faint hearted from participating but this is unnecessary. Payment for outsourced work is different, yes, but not dangerous or risky. There are two realistic methods for outsourced payment:

Fixed price payment

Fixed price payment is self-explanatory in that a price is paid upon completion of a specialised job. This method is popular amongst those outsourcing for the first time, but it does come with problems because of the trust based nature of outsourcing. As employers cannot ensure that staff are completing as many hours as they say they are, there is potential for conflict. By setting a well-defined basis of requirements, it is possible to ensure the correct results but it is important to keep record of this in case issues occur.

Pay as you go

Outsourcing enables the utilisation of pay as you go operations. Whilst this seems strange to many employees it does enable realistic performance based payment. By paying per hour, or per element, the buyer is able to control and actively monitor the work of the outsourced staff member as it goes on. This enables cessation of contracts, if the buyer is unsatisfied, and provides high levels of freedom to both parties as long as requirements are met.

4. Outsourcing is filled with potential

Outsourcing may seem uncomfortable at first but it is cheaper than employing full-time staff, often enables better results, and gives you a wider pool from which to choose the best staff. Outsourcing has a huge potential for businesses large and small so be sure to consider the opportunities available to you before signing the next employee contract.

Customer service is all about efficiency. It’s also about having efficient phone systems and designing those systems for best operational performance. Business phone systems really are a critical factor in all areas of business, but in customer service, they’re also literally the medium for doing business. Businesses are phone-dependent to a very large extent, and it’s important to appreciate this truly symbiotic relationship for its hard dollar values.

Working with the Relationship

The typical business phone system needs to operate on a best practice, fully customized basis. Forget about the generic, “One Size Fits Nobody” types of phone systems. All businesses have different needs, different priorities and above all different customer service issues. Just about everything on any business system, directly or indirectly, is really a form of customer service-related operation. These systems need to be easy to operate and ultra-efficient.

The ideal phone system has:

Fast turnaround routines- Speed is the real business value of a good phone system. You can turn over a lot of business in a hurry with the right system. If you don’t need a queue, don’t use a queue. The trouble with the over-automated systems is that they can actually work against businesses, with a lot of intermediary steps where fewer would make more sense and move calls faster. If you’ve got a big centralized inquiry system, the queues work quite well. But they’re not the best option for a “I need to talk to someone” based business or service, where the caller should be diverted to a customer service operator.

Server based and virtual PBX operations- The old switchboards, believe it or not, have been replaced with virtual switchboards known as “virtual PBX”. Phone servers and virtual PBX system operate a lot faster.

Good phone system management software- To the great relief of everybody on Earth doing business, telephone systems designers have finally made the point about simplifying the physical management of phone systems. The new “contact centre” software allows easy management of 1000 extensions. In the past, you’d have needed a tonne of hardware to do this, with related costs. You can now literally get this sort of operational efficiency in a box.

Customized operational modes- The severe limitations on business efficiency caused by having to design phone business operations around the capabilities of a phone system are now, finally, gone. The combination of servers, virtual PBX systems and good software has eliminated this ridiculously out of date, expensive situation forever. These new systems can work with any sort of business configuration, and a few clicks will set up any type of phone business.

The New Operational Approach

The new systems are really major improvements all across the board. Modern businesses are communications rich. They need to be able to manage their communications well, because these communications really are their business, to a very large extent. Call streaming, allocation of human resources and business assets must be done according to need.

This is real symbiosis, and it can make your customer service a lot more efficient than you’d ever have dreamed. If you’re looking for better options, get a phone system that can be tailored to do your business. It’s that simple.

For the majority of our lives we will be working a 9 to 5 job for at least 5 days a week. This is a sad fact of life but one that we simply have to live with because it is the nature of our society. Preparing for retirement and putting away your hard earned cash may seem difficult, but it is undoubtedly the wisest thing to do because the sooner you can afford to retire the more time you will have to enjoy without the rigorous demands of a full-time job. This brief article will consider some of the ways you can best invest for your future.

Superannuation Fund

A superannuation fund is the most common way that Australians invest for their future. The basic principle of a super is that both you and your employer make contributions to a fund which will then become available to you upon retirement. This is the reason that money will be taken from your payments each week or month. Dishearteningly, a large proportion of Australian supers do not provide enough money for a retired worker to live on for the rest of their lives, as is intended. It is essential to consult accountants in Sydney with regards to making the best super investments to ensure you will have enough to look after yourself when you are retired.

Different supers will offer different returns, so it is important to shop around for the best deal. It is also important to consider who is profiting from your investment because every company will take a cut of the profits for themselves whenever returns are made from investments. Be sure that the percentage taken from your fund is not too great and that you are not being cheated of your retirement fund.

Self Managed Superannuation Funds

A SMSF is the same as a superannuation fund except for one simple detail: you are in control of it. Self managing a super gives you complete control of your investments and enables you to manage your retirement fund as you please. The benefit of this is that it enables you to make stronger investments and remain in complete control of the level and diversification of your investments. There are, however, greater requirements on the individual because you will be required to understand, monitor and maintain investments.

A self managed super can include between 1 and 4 people and requires a directors board. There are legal implications to running a super for yourself, but as long as you act appropriately and follow all of the guidelines correctly, you will be able to achieve greater control and a greater return.

Property Investment

Property investment should not be carried out in isolation or entered into lightly, but it is an excellent way to generate additional funds for your retirement. Property is a particularly safe investment because there is rarely a large fluctuation in the property market values and there tends to be a continuous upwards trend in the price of property.

There is also the added factor of being able to borrow against property to enable a greater initial investment. This means that you can effectively invest a larger amount at first and watch it grow as you pay back the mortgage. By renting a property you will be able to make it work for you and make a positive investment in your future rather than the negative investment of rental payments.
